Ely Hospital
A Regeneration Success Story
Macob Projects successfully bought the site of Cardiff's former Ely Hospital from Bro Taf Health Authority in 1998.
Macob's expertise in many different engineering disciplines enabled the group to be involved with the 22-acre mixed-use scheme from conception to completion. The skills of the whole group transformed and re-generated the site, giving it a new lease of life.
Macob Construction built the food store, Macob Ltd provided the shell works including laying the foundations for Westbury Homes, and Macob Civil Engineering was employed to arrange demolition of the existing structures and arrange the new infrastructure including works to the A48 trunk road, Cowbridge Road West.
Westbury Homes bought eight acres of land to build 103 homes and Wales and West Housing Association purchased four acres to construct 58 units, a portion of which is affordable housing.
A major boost to the development came when discount giants Aldi acquired a parcel of land to build a 13,000 sq ft food store, closely followed by Farmfoods, the frozen food specialists.
Although the site is no longer home to a hospital, some health facilities have been retained. A primary care centre for the local community provides the first level of care before hospital. Other facilities include a community centre.
